As of September 2019, PVHS will offer an IB Diploma Program, which enables students to centralize their education around global topics involving inquiry, reflection and international mindedness.
PVHS is the first school in Putnam County to receive this recognition.
“Opening the door to IB will advance student engagement in learning and empower them to apply that knowledge to real-world issues that will matter most in their future endeavors,” said Dr. Fran Wills, Superintendent of Schools.
Teachers have received extensive training and curriculum rewrites throughout the past three years when the IB Program authorization process began.
All PVHS students will receive the opportunity to participate in IB courses. Students yearning for more of a challenge may be interested in higher level courses. Some will pursue a complete IB Diploma, which shows that the student has received a well-rounded education, participated in a Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) project, wrote an extended essay based on their own research and more.
Similar to Advanced Placement (AP) classes, the majority of IB classes may count toward the student’s college credit.
“This was a tremendous undertaking by our High School staff. Their commitment to preparing students for their future endeavors is evident,” said Dr. Luft, Deputy Superintendent of the Putnam Valley Schools. “Putnam Valley High School is now one of four schools in the Hudson Valley to offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate degree and we are very excited and proud.”
